The development of Ukrainian seed production is a matter of national security. It is crucial for Ukraine to have its own seed varieties and to export them to international markets.
This was stated by the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, Vitaliy Koval, during a working meeting on the export potential of forage grass seeds and amaranth production.
The sector of niche and feed crops have significant potential. For example, amaranth is used to produce flour, oil, flakes, and bars. It is also used as silage for animals and in the production of biomethane.
Approximately 150 farms in Ukraine are included in growing amaranth. Last year, its exports reached $600,000.
Alfalfa, clover, and other forage crops are equally promising crops that are in demand in the EU. Last year, their export exceeded 500,000 tons, with the greatest demand for Ukrainian alfalfa observed in Italy, where a specialized hub for its processing has been established.
