Veterinary control bodies of Latvia will inspect Ukrainian egg products more intensively for 6 month

The Ukrainian eggs and egg products will be inspected more intensively in Latvia during 6 month. Its government has allocated funds in the amount of 125 thousand euros for this purpose. This information was published on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture of this Baltic country. The report says that due to of detecting contamination of the egg products, the PVD (Food and Veterinary Service) must intensify control over all imported eggs and egg products from Ukraine.

This is explained by the necessity to protect the consumers’ health because of the increased imports of Ukrainian eggs and egg products, contaminated with salmonella. On Tuesday, June 9, the Latvian government gave a hearing to the report of the Ministry of Agriculture. Funds are allocated from the program of the state budget “Reserve funds”.

In the Latvian system of Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) during 2019, the Food and Veterinary Office (FVS) registered four cases of detection of salmonella in eggs and egg products from Ukraine, which exceeded the EU safety standards.

According to the protocol approved by the government in 2020, for additional control measures 125 thousand euros will be needed. 105 thousand euros from this sum will be required for funding the BIOR Institute (a research centre of national importance, working in the field of public health and the environment, food, fish and veterinary medicine industries), and another 20 thousand euros – for the PVD.
