The Verkhovna Rada made the first step towards regulating the circulation of GMOs in Ukraine

The Verkhovna Rada adopted a bill on state regulation of genetic engineering activity and state control over the circulation of genetically modified organisms and genetically modified products.

The document will contribute to the harmonization of Ukrainian legislation with EU legislation and the implementation of relevant legal acts.

The main provisions of the bill are aimed at delimiting the powers of state authorities in order to eliminate the duplication of functions in the field of handling GMOs, as well as improving the GMO risk assessment system regarding the possible impact on human health and the natural environment. European mechanisms for state registration of GMOs are also being introduced.

At the same time, the document improves the requirements for the labeling of GMO products, which will not allow mislead the consumer, and will also enhance state control in the field of handling GMOs and establish responsibility for violations of legislation in this area.
