Ukrainian steel hit by Trump’s tariffs: government seeks solutions

On February 10, the U.S. President signed an executive order that canceled Ukraine’s temporary exemption from tariffs on the import of steel and steel products. Ukraine will continue active efforts with its partners to find an optimal solution for the metallurgical industry before the U.S. tariffs take effect. The executive order states that, starting March 12, 2025, all previous exemptions for Ukraine regarding the import of steel and related steel products will be revoked.

From that date onward, a 25% tariff will be applied to Ukraine, as it will be to all other countries. Trump claims that the removal of tariffs on Ukrainian steel benefited European producers rather than Ukrainian ones. The e.o. notes that imports from Ukraine remained at 0.5% of total U.S. imports, while imports from the EU increased from 11.2% to 14.8%.
