Ukraine has the potential to enter the European market for forest planting material. The expected export revenue from the sale of planting material for five main species – pine, spruce, fir, larch and oak – can reach almost 5 million euros per year, and the projected profit – about 2 million euros annually. To achieve this, the state is working on the development of modern forest seed production, modernization of forest seed centers and updating of legislation. The goal is to form a competitive domestic market for planting material and create conditions for its export to EU countries.

Today, 9 modern forest nurseries with a total capacity of 14 million seedlings per year are already operating in Ukraine. By 2030, this figure is planned to be more than doubled – to 30 million seedlings.

The priority is the entry of Ukrainian planting material into the EU market. The annual production capacity of the industry in the European Union is 2.4 billion seedlings, of which 44% are seedlings with a closed root system. In this direction, Ukraine has a real potential to become a full-fledged supplier to this market. Ukraine’s domestic need for seedlings with a closed root system is about 20 million units, and the export potential is another about 10 million per year.
