Ukraine increases sunflower oil exports to India

Over the past three months, Ukraine has been increasing its sunflower oil exports to India, with a 57% increase in July compared to June, reaching 78,000 tons. In July, the share of Ukrainian oil in India’s total sunflower oil imports surpassed Russia’s share for the first time in two years. Of the 200,000 tons of sunflower oil imported by India in July, Ukraine accounted for 39%, while Russia contributed 25% or 49,000 tons. Previously, Ukraine’s share in India’s sunflower oil imports varied between 13-34%, never exceeding Russia’s, which had dominated the Indian market for several seasons.

From September to July, Ukraine supplied 767,000 tons of sunflower oil to India, a 55% increase compared to the previous year and the highest since 2022. India remains the leading importer of Ukrainian sunflower oil.

A sharp rise in palm oil prices has driven India’s increased purchases of sunflower oil, with delivery prices to Indian ports increasing from $1,200/ton in June to $1,220/ton in July and $1,230-$1,240/ton in August. However, the growth in sunflower oil prices was limited by lower soybean oil prices, which led to increased soybean oil imports.
