Over the past 5 years, Ukraine has increased its export of agricultural crop seeds, including grains and oilseeds, by sixfold while simultaneously reducing their import volumes.
During this period, seed exports reached $122.0 million.
One of the reasons for this is the ability to produce high-quality hybrid seeds of foreign selection at modern factories in Ukraine, meeting domestic needs and enabling exports to EU countries. Additionally, domestic consumption of seeds has decreased due to a reduction in the area of commercial crops.
Despite an increase in the sowing of some grain and oilseed niche crops, these factors have led to an increase in the import of seed material for crops such as rye, oats, sorghum, flax, hemp, mustard, as well as sugar beet and vegetable seeds, during 2022-2024.
The Institute of Agrarian Economics (IAE) forecasts that in 2025 and the following years, exports will grow annually by 10-15%, while imports of agricultural crop seeds will stabilize at a level of $350-400 million.
