During the third round of intergovernmental consultations in Košice, Ukraine and Slovakia agreed to expand border checkpoints, develop railway routes, and jointly participate in European transport programs.
Kuleba signed a protocol with Slovakia's Deputy Prime Minister for the Recovery Plan and Knowledge Economy, Peter Kmec, amending the intergovernmental Agreement on Border Checkpoints.
The document provides for the opening of the pedestrian crossing “Uzhhorod – Vyšné Nemecké” by the end of the year. Reconstruction of the crossing is already underway, and work is being carried out in parallel to launch a passenger terminal that will separate freight and passenger flows and increase capacity by 20%.
It is also planned to increase the load capacity of the "Malyi Bereznyi – Ubľa" checkpoint to five tons, which will improve conditions for residents of border communities and small businesses.
In the area of railway connections, following the launch of the Kyiv – Bratislava route, preparations are underway to extend the line to Vienna and Prague.
Separately, the parties discussed the possibility of Slovakia transferring electric locomotives to Ukraine free of charge to ensure movement on the European gauge track on the Uzhorod – Chop – Košice route.
An agreement was also reached to reduce border crossing time for passengers by increasing the number of border service and customs staff at the railway checkpoint.
