Ukraine is on the 2-nd place by exports of organic products to the EU

According to the results of 2019, Ukraine is on the 2-nd place by volumes of the organic products exports to the European Union.

This information was found in the annual report of the European Commission on „EU imports of organic agri-food products: key developments in 2019“ and published on the website Оrganicinfo.

The report says that Ukraine has significantly strengthened its positions on the EU organic products market. According to the results of 2019, Ukraine is on the 2-nd place among 123 other countries by volumes of the organic products exports to the European Union. Ukraine has moved forward in the list by two positions in comparison with the previous year.

It is noted that during 2019, 3,24 million tons of organic agri-products have been delivered to the EU, and more than 10% of this amount belong to Ukraine. The Ukrainian exports of organic products to the EU last year increased by 27% in comparison with 2018 (to 337, 86 thousand tons). In total, organic products amount to almost 2% of the total imports of agri-food products to the EU.

Talking about the EU imports of organic cereal crops (except rice and wheat), the Ukrainian share is 76,9%; the Ukrainian share in the total EU wheat imports is 31,8%; in the total imports of the organic oil plants (except soy beans) the Ukrainian share is18,2%; in the soy beans imports – 13%, in fruits imports – 11%. At the same time Ukraine is in the group of the largest exporters of organic oilcake, fruit juices and vegetables to the EU.

In 2018, Ukraine was on the 4-th place by volumes of the organic products exports to the European Union, with China, Ecuador and Dominican Republic in front of it in the list. It has to be mentioned that Ecuador and Dominican Republic supply the EU with almost exclusively tropical products.

As it has been reported before, on May 20, the European Commission published the EU strategy „From farm to fork“, according to which, the land for organic production should be increased to 25% of agricultural land by 2030. Currently, the share of this land in the EU is about 8%.
