From October 2024 to January 2025, Turkey imported 1.86 million tons of Ukrainian corn, which is nearly 10 times more than during the same period of the previous season, when import volumes amounted to only 194,000 tons.
As a result, Turkey overtook Spain and became the top importer of Ukrainian corn. Spain imported 1.5 million tons of Ukrainian corn over the same four-month period.
The sharp increase in demand from Turkey, particularly during the first three months of the season, was driven by the active use of its corn import quota, which was fully exhausted by early December 2024, almost a month ahead of the deadline.
Meanwhile, Spain significantly increased its purchases of American corn this season, reducing imports of Ukrainian grain due to the price advantage of exporting American corn.
