The tenth meeting of the Ukrainian-American Trade and Investment Council

On November 9, 2021 the Tenth meeting of the Ukrainian-American Trade and Investment Council took place. The meeting was opened by the First Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Economy of Ukraine Yulia Svyrydenko and the US Trade Representative Catherine Tai.

The First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko has commented that the USA is a reliable strategic partner of Ukraine, who provides support to Ukraine in implementation of the economic reforms, improvement of the business climate and strengthening the defense capabilities. The Ukraine’s Government transforms its economic policy taking into account the environmental modernization and the achievements of the climate neutrality, which coincides with the vision of the United States. Both countries share the wish to solve the global issues, such as climate change, decarbonisation of the economy and food security.

Ukraine and the USA have discussed the next steps in reviewing the Trade-Investment Cooperation Agreement (TICA). The Ukrainian party presented the relevant offers. 

In the context of the recent agreement between the United States and the European Union, the Ukrainian party raised the issue of possible ways to level the restrictions imposed by the American side on Ukrainian steel products.

As for the intellectual property, the parties agreed to continue working on the draft working plan aimed at improvement of protection of intellectual property rights. The plan identifies steps Ukraine can take to demonstrate progress on key intellectual property issues.

Moreover, the delegations have discussed the work on improvement of the investment environment of Ukraine. Both parties emphasized the importance of predictability, transparency and the rule of law in attracting foreign investment. The USA representatives called on Ukraine to introduce an investment verification mechanism based on the best international experience and stressed the importance of good corporate governance practices for attracting and retaining foreign investment.

The Parties agreed to create the working group on working relations development issues. 

In general, the parties acknowledged the progress, achieved in many spheres and agreed to continue work aimed at development of mutually beneficial cooperation.

For your reference. The United States of America and Ukraine signed the Agreement on Cooperation in the spheres of Trade and Investment of the USA and Ukraine (TICA) in 2008. During the visit of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi (31.08.2021) to the USA at the highest level it was agreed to review and broaden the Agreement.
