Romania heads for record soybean imports: Ukraine is the main supplier

In the 2024/25 marketing year, Romania plans to import a record volume of soybeans.

Available statistics for September–July show that approximately 270 thousand tonnes of soybeans were imported, which is already an absolute record for the country.

Since the start of the war, Ukraine has become the largest supplier of this commodity to Romania. After several years of summer droughts, local processors have faced certain problems with the origin of domestic sunflower seed, particularly due to high prices. As a result, imports of soybeans and crude sunflower oil of Ukrainian origin are showing an upward trend.

Port data indicate that the pace of sunflower exports from Romania remains high, with Turkey being the main destination.
