The Procedure and special requirements for food labeling have been approved

The Ministry of Economy has approved the Procedure and special requirements for food labeling, for which it is mandatory to indicate the country of origin or place of origin. The relevant order dated from 01.04.2021 № 679 was registered in the Ministry of Justice on 06.05.2021.

This Procedure establishes the rules for indicating the ,,country of origin” or ,,place of origin” in the labeling:

  1. Meat of cattle, fresh or chilled;
  2. Meat of cattle, frozen;
  3. Fresh, chilled and frozen pork;
  4. Fresh, chilled and frozen mutton and goat meat;
  5. Cattle edible by-products;  fresh, chilled, or frozen;
  6. Poultry meat and its edible by-products;
  7. Honey;
  8. Virgin olive oil and extra virgin olive oil.

The procedure will be applied to the labeling of the above-mentioned food products produced in Ukraine or imported (shipped) to the customs territory of Ukraine, at all stages of their realiztion.

The Procedure will not apply to the above food products that are intended (produced) for personal consumption. The order comes into force from the date of its official publication and comes into force in 3 years from the date of its entry into force.

Food products for which, according to this order, it is obligatory to indicate the country of origin or place of origin, which meet the requirements of the legislation on providing consumers with information about food products before this Procedure was valid, but do not meet the requirements of this Procedure may be on sale before the final date of consumption or expiration date.

The Procedure complies with the following EU acts:

  • Regulation (EC) No 1760/2000 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 July 2000 establishing a system for the identification and registration of cattle and the labeling of beef and beef products thereof, and cancelling Council Regulation (EC) (820/97) of 21 April 2000 1997;
  • Commission Regulation (EC) № 1825/2000 of 25 August 2000 providing detailed rules for the application of Regulation (EC) No 1760/2000 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 July 2000 on the labeling of beef and beef products;
  • Commission Regulation (EU) № 1337/2013 of 13 December 2013 providing  rules for the application of Regulation (EC) No 1169/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards the indication of the country of origin or place of provenance of fresh, chilled and frozen pigmeat, sheep, goats and poultry;
  • Council Directive 2001/110 / EC of 20 December 2001 relating to honey;
  • Commission Implementing Regulation № 29/2012 of 13 January 2012 on the marketing standards for olive oil.
