Pork imports intensified

Pork imports showed signs of intensification in January. External shipments of chilled and frozen pork in January surpassed the total import volumes for the fourth quarter of 2024.

During the first month of the year Ukraine imported approximately 323 tons of pork, which is more than double the combined volume of products imported from October to December of the previous year, as well as in January 2024.

The average purchase price of slaughter-ready live pigs in January increased by 5.5% compared to December, which is not typical price behavior for the winter period. This increase was a market response to a reduced domestic supply. In contrast, European pork prices continued their typical seasonal decline. Although the average customs value of imported pork per kilogram was higher than the average recorded throughout the previous year ($2.84 vs. $2.52/kg excluding VAT in 2024), several meat processing companies took advantage of this opportunity to optimize raw material costs.

Export volumes of pork in January slightly lost to imports, reaching 295 tons. In addition to the main export markets (UAE, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Liberia), pork supplies to Georgia resumed at the beginning of the year.
