Last year, Ukraine primarily imported seeds from the EU and the USA

In 2024, Ukraine mostly imported seeds of grain and oilseed crops from EU countries, the largest amount of hybrid corn was imported, and the purchase of rapeseed was also increased. “Ukraine purchased seeds of grain and oilseed crops, sugar beets, and vegetables worth $381.3 million.

The vast majority of supplies (52.5%) came from EU countries, which sold seeds to domestic farmers for over $200 million. The USA accounted for 19.0%, with imports from this country reaching $72.6 million,” - the statement says.
Last year, 95.8% of grain seed imports to Ukraine consisted of hybrid corn, with 7,600 tons supplied. Seed wheat purchases reached 700 tons, barley – 300 tons, rye – 42 tons, and sorghum – 32 tons. The main suppliers were France, Germany, Czechia, Denmark, and Italy. In the import of oilseed crop seeds, sunflower seeds made up 81.5% (17,400 tons), while 4,100 tons of rapeseed and 700 tons of soybeans were also purchased. Approximately 80% of Ukraine’s domestic seed imports were for grain and oilseed crops, with sunflower seeds accounting for 55% of the total value. More than three-quarters of sunflower seeds were purchased from the USA – 5,500 tons for $72.5 million (34.3%) – and Turkey – 7,900 tons for $85.7 million (40.6%). Smaller volumes came from France – 1,900 tons for $24.8 million (11.7%), Italy – 600 tons for $4.7 million (2.2%), and Hungary – 400 tons for $5.0 million (2.4%).

10% of the total amount of seed purchases – $41.4 million – was spent on acquiring corn. Its main suppliers were: France – 2,700 tons for $19.8 million (47.8%), Romania – 1,700 tons for $6.4 million (15.5%), Austria – 1,600 tons for $7.5 million (18.1%), Hungary – 1,100 tons for $3.9 million (9.5%), Germany (68 tons for $1 million), and Italy (131 tons for $0.4 million).

Soybean seeds, with a total value of $2.9 million, were imported from Canada (270 tons – 38% of soybean imports), Austria (186 tons), Romania (119 tons), and France (89 tons).
