Export of Ukrainian apples to Canada: Step-by-step actions for exporters

Earlier this year, Canada opened its market to Ukrainian apples. A key element of this process was the approval by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) of the Export Program for Ukrainian Apples (Malus domestica) to Canada.

The State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection (SSUFSCP) has developed a roadmap for Ukrainian producers, taking into account Ukrainian legislation and the Program. This roadmap is published on the official SSUFSCP website under the section “International Cooperation” – “Phytosanitary” – “Phytosanitary Requirements of Countries.”

Step-by-step actions for exporters:

  • Registration: Exporters, producers, and packers must be registered with the SSUFSCP and included in the List of Exporters, Producers, and Packers of Ukrainian Apples to Canada.
  • Submission of application: After conducting an inspection, submit a letter of application and a copy of the inspection report to the SSUFSCP. The letter must include information in both English and Ukrainian about the legal and actual address of the producer/packer/exporter and their names.
  • Obtaining a phytosanitary certificate: After being included in the List, apply for a phytosanitary certificate by contacting the relevant territorial body of the SSUFSCP.

Additional requirements:

  • According to the CFIA, before a phytosanitary certificate is issued and the shipment is sent from Ukraine, the Canadian importer must obtain an import permit from the competent Canadian authority.
  • Entities included in the List of Exporters, Producers, and Packers of Ukrainian Apples to Canada must take measures to protect the products during storage, packing, loading, and transportation to prevent contamination by harmful organisms.
