Construction of a modern waste recycling complex is our goal, – Oleksandr Skichko

The head of Cherkasy Regional State Administration met with representatives of the Latvian company Eco Baltia vide, which belongs to the group of companies Eco Baltia. They specialize, in particular, in the collection of secondary raw materials and their processing. The mayors of Cherkasy, Smila and Zolotonosha were also invited to the dialogue. Together they discussed the prospects of building a plant for sorting and processing of solid wastes in the region.

Oleksandr Skichko said that in winter during a meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to Ukraine Juris Poikans he discussed the “garbage” issue. Latvia has made significant progress in resolving it over the last 10 years. Sorting of wastes is a responsibility for every Latvian. Waste is recycled and converted into electricity, which goes to lighting and heating of greenhouses in the cold season. At the landfills in Latvia there are no mountains of waste, and vegetables grow in high-tech greenhouses.

“I have no illusions that the construction of the plant in the region will solve all the problems with waste. They need a comprehensive approach: from adjusting legislation to changing the thinking of each of us. But I am convinced that the one who walks will master the road,” - said the head of the region Oleksandr Skichko.

It should be mentioned that more than a million tons of waste are generated annually in Cherkasy region. Out of 21 landfills, the largest ones are in Cherkasy, Smila, Vatutine and Uman city. And now they are already overfilled. The action plan to solve the garbage problem in the region was discussed at the collegiate meeting last week.
