The Council of the EU, the European Commission and the European Parliament supported the continuation of free trade agreement with Ukraine until June 2025. The decision envisages a protective mechanism within which quotas and duties can be introduced for particularly sensitive agricultural products: poultry meat, eggs, sugar, oats, corn, cereals and honey. The launch of the safeguard mechanism will depend on the import volumes which were between mid-2021 and the end of 2023.

In the first half of the 2023/24 season, Ukrainian sugar export amounted to 430 000 tons, which is 60% higher than last year's figure. Ukrainian sugar export in March 2024 amounted to 81 thousand tons, compared with 75 thousand tons in the previous month and 48 thousand tons in March 2023. For the first half of the 2023/24 season, Ukrainian sugar exports amounted to 430 000 tons, compared to 262 000 tons in the corresponding period of the previous marketing year.

The Committee on International Trade of the European Parliament at its meeting on April 9 approved a one-year extension of the agreement on duty-free food trade with Ukraine with additional restrictions.

Taking into account safety measures for agricultural products, the extension of Ukraine's preferential trade regime with the EU was voted for by 26 members of the European Parliament's relevant committee, while 8 voted against.

As of April 10, in 2023/2024 marketing year, Ukraine exported 37 million 086 thousand tons of grain and leguminous crops, which is 1 million 738 thousand tons or 1,04 times less than last year. This is reported on the website of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine.

In 2023/2024 marketing year, 36 million 439 thousand tons of grain and leguminous crops were exported.
