After the full-scale invasion of russia, the Ukrainian vegetable sector suffered significant losses, but by 2023 it has almost recovered. Moreover, the export of vegetables, primarily onions and garlic, is growing.
The total harvest of vegetable crops in 2023 increased by 10% to 8 297 thousand tons, although it still lagged behind the figure of 2021 (9 935 thousand tons). The main share here was mainly provided by borshch vegetables: tomatoes – 1 684 thousand tons; cabbage - 1598 thousand tons; onion - 889 thousand tons; cucumbers - 874 thousand tons; carrots - 844 thousand tons; beets - 777 thousand tons. An increase in the gross collection was recorded for each of the named crops. As for potatoes, their production amounted to 21 359 thousand tons, exceeding the volume of 2022 by 2%.
In 2023 already, there was an increase in Ukraine's export of the absolute majority of fresh vegetables, which continued at the beginning of the current year, so far the most seen in the onion and garlic segment.
The market of vegetables in our country during the war for the third year in a row demonstrates the adaptation of all the main components (production, consumption, foreign trade), trying to achieve an optimal balance between the existing demand and potential supply, taking into account the reduce in the number of consumers.
