Ukraine is displacing Russia from the Chinese sunflower meal market

China has doubled its imports of sunflower meal in the 2025/26 marketing year due to the suspension of Canadian canola meal supplies. At the same time, Ukraine and Kazakhstan have increased their share of supplies to the Chinese market, while Russia has reduced its share.

In the first 7 months of the current season, China purchased 1.2 million tons of sunflower meal from Ukraine. The country holds a 72% share of total Chinese imports of this product and remains the leader. Last season, during the same period, the share of Ukrainian products was 57% (461 thousand tons).

Russia ranks second among exporters of sunflower meal to China. In September–March of the 2025/26 MY, China imported 182 thousand tons from Russia (11%), compared to 205 thousand tons (25%) in the same period last season.

Kazakhstan took third place among the top suppliers of sunflower meal to the Chinese market, surpassing Bulgaria. China purchased 154 thousand tons of Kazakhstani product, accounting for 9% of total imports (compared to 36 thousand tons and 5% last season).

From Bulgaria, China imported 133 thousand tons of sunflower meal this season (8%), compared to 103 thousand tons (13%) in the previous season.
