The total volume of vegetable exports amounted to $115 million, while imports significantly exceeded this figure, reaching $376 million.
The foreign trade balance for vegetables indicates a substantial dependence on imports. It is indicated that potato production in Ukraine in the 2023/24 marketing year (MY) totaled 21,4 million tons, a 2,4% decrease compared to the previous year. The main producers are the northern and western regions of the country, particularly Zhytomyr, Chernihiv, and Volyn region. In the 2023/24 MY, Ukraine grew: tomatoes – 1,684 thousand tons, cabbage – 1,598 thousand tons, onions – 1,024 thousand tons, cucumbers – 874 thousand tons, and carrots – 761 thousand tons. Among the largest import categories were tomatoes – $116.8 million, onions – $63.1 million, other fresh vegetables – $56.8 million, cucumbers – $34 million, and cabbage – $29.6 million. The most exported items from Ukraine were fresh or dried legumes – $0.85 million, onions, garlic, and greens – $0.64 million.
The largest suppliers of vegetables to Ukraine remain Turkey – $148.3 million, Poland – $71.5 million, and the Netherlands – $36.9 million. The main buyers of Ukrainian products are Turkey – $20.6 million, Poland – $12 million, and Italy – $11.2 million.
