EU decided not to extend duty-free trade with Ukraine

The European Commission does not plan to continue trade with Ukraine under the current conditions after June 5, intending instead to return tariffs on agricultural products that the EU had canceled in 2022.

EU Agriculture Commissioner Christoph Hansen announced the deal as part of the DCFTA (Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area) trade agreement . This is part of the 2016 Association Agreement between the EU and Ukraine.

The agreement refers to the DCFTA (Article 29), which would involve mutual trade liberalization, unlike the current regulation that benefits only Ukraine. This would benefit both Ukrainian and European companies. In some cases, it could mean establishing quotas on sensitive agricultural products from Ukraine and introducing new safeguard measures.

The DCFTA agreement would also mean that Ukraine would need to adapt to the EU’s food safety and animal welfare standards. All of this would serve the gradual integration of Ukraine into the single market, with the aim of its future EU membership.
