USAID will allocate 225 million US dollars for the construction of the dually gauged rail (Eurotrack) to Lviv

The U.S., through USAID, will provide financing for the construction of 75-kilometer (47-mile) segment of dually gauged rail which will connect Lviv with the Trans European Network for Transport  with a total amount of 225 million US dollars. Ukrainian railways use a gauge of 1520 mm, while the railways of European countries have a standard gauge of a smaller width - 1435 mm. Because of this, wagons have to be overloaded at border railway crossings.

"Overloading of one train can last more than 5 hours, which limits the number of trains that may cross Ukraine's borders with European countries in a day. This time-wasting process often reduces the efficiency of transporting grain and other agricultural products," - in the agency explained.
