Government temporarily banned export of unprocessed timber

At the request of business the Cabinet of Ministers banned export of unprocessed timber. The decision was made following a visit to Rivne region. It provides for licensing of timber exports – with a zero quota until the end of the year. Timber harvesting in Ukraine significantly decreased during the full-scale war. Due to the shortage of raw wood, enterprises are either suspending operations or working at minimal capacity.

The military also requires timber for their needs. In rural communities, where firewood is a key resource for winter heating , the availability of timber is critical for people’s survival.

Exporting timber would place additional pressure on the environment, which has already suffered a lot of damage due to the war. Part of the forests are temporarily occupied by russian forces, while another part has been damaged by hostilities.

The government countries keep working on long-term solutions to address the systemic shortage of timber.
