The EU will return quotas for the import of eggs from Ukraine, and sugar will be next

The import of eggs from Ukraine has reached a level where the European Commission is forced to apply "emergency braking". A decision will be approved within the next two weeks.

It is noted that such measures of the EU are provided for by the new free trade scheme, which came into force on June 6. The commission has the right to re-introduce tariff quotas if the import of certain goods (eggs, poultry, sugar, oats, corn, hulled grain and honey) exceeds the arithmetic average of import volumes between July 1, 2021 and December 31, 2023.

Sugar imports are also closely monitored by the EU executive. Two informed sources noted that sugar is a likely candidate for restrictions, saying that according to customs statistics, import volumes already exceed the "emergency braking" limit.
