Ukraine and Japan are approaching the restoration of poultry product exports

Last week, representatives of Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries conducted an online audit of Ukraine’s control system and production facilities accredited for exporting poultry products to that country.

This is one of the key stages of multi-year work to lift restrictions on imports of Ukrainian poultry products into Japan, the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection (Derzhprodspozhyvsluzhba) reported.

Ukraine previously had access to this market: exports of poultry meat and products thereof were opened in 2020, and table eggs in 2021. However, after an outbreak of avian influenza was registered among wild birds in 2021, the Japanese side suspended certification of poultry products from Ukraine – poultry meat and products thereof, as well as table eggs.

If the audit results are positive, Japan’s competent authority will be able to proceed with lifting the restrictions on imports of poultry products from Ukrainian facilities.

The Japanese market has high requirements for product safety and the state control system. Therefore, the successful completion of the audit will be important not only for restoring a specific trade direction, but also for confirming the ability of Ukraine’s control system and producers to meet the requirements of the importing country, Derzhprodspozhyvsluzhba stressed.
