Ukraine remains a 100% net importer of almonds: last year, 4,201 tonnes of shelled nuts worth more than €23 million were brought into the country. All almond-based dishes consumed in Ukraine are made from imported raw materials.
The scale of domestic production shows how far Ukraine is from covering this demand. The total area of industrial nut orchards in the country is about 14.2 thousand hectares, of which 7.9 thousand hectares are planted with hazelnuts, approximately 6.1 thousand hectares with walnuts, and only about 150 hectares with almonds.
At a yield of around one tonne per hectare, which modern varieties can deliver, the existing plantations can supply about 150 tonnes of nuts – roughly one twenty-eighth of the volume the country buys abroad each year. In other words, full import substitution would require increasing the planted area by approximately thirty times.
