The EU does not plan to limit import from Ukraine despite farmers' complaints

The EU is not considering the option of introducing previously canceled tariffs on Ukrainian agricultural products, despite the negative impact on farmers in some countries. This was stated by the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Janusz Wojciechowski, following the results of the Council of EU Ministers in Brussels.

The main issue of the meeting was the situation on the agricultural market due to the war in Ukraine. Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Slovakia presented reports on the consequences of increased import of agricultural products from Ukraine for the producers of these countries.

The import of wheat from Ukraine to the EU increased significantly: from 287 000 tons in 2021 to 2,8 million tons in 2022. The volume of imported Ukrainian corn has almost doubled - from 7,3 million tons in 2021 to 12 million tons in 2022.

But the most significant increase appeared to be in the import of sunflower seeds into the EU: in 2021, this figure was 25 000 tons, and in 2022 - already 1,8 million tons.

The EU Council decided that to solve this problem it is necessary to take measures at the level of the European Union. However, it is about helping farmers, not about barriers or a ban on the import of goods from Ukraine.
