Ukraine and Sri Lanka discussed the possibility of strengthening trade and economic cooperation

On September 9, 2021 Deputy Minister - Trade Representative of Ukraine Taras Kachka discussed with the State Minister of Regional Cooperation of Sri Lanka  Tharaka Balasuriya the possibility of strengthening trade and economic relations between the two countries.

The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Economy and the State Ministry of Regional Cooperation of Sri Lanka.

Thus, the parties noted that bilateral trade in goods between Ukraine and Sri Lanka shows a tendency to increase. For 6 months of 2021 the trade turnover between the two countries amounted to 28, 59 million US dollars. In particular, export increased by 12,8% compared to the same period last year - to 9,22 million US dollars.

„The basis of our export to Sri Lanka is traditionally agricultural products - vegetables, grains, oilseeds. It is obvious that the trade potential between our countries has not been revealed yet. We, in our turn, are open to cooperation in the trade and economic sphere and the implementation of joint business projects,“ - said Taras Kachka.

Thus, the participants of the meeting expressed interest in increasing supplies to the Ukrainian market of food (tea, coffee, fruit) and industrial (textiles, clothing) products. Also promising is cooperation in the spheres of aircraft and shipbuilding, supply of Ukrainian metallurgy, energy and transport engineering, chemical industry and agriculture, recreational cooperation and tourism. The parties reaffirmed the commitment of Ukraine and the Sri Lankan State Ministry of Regional Cooperation to create a joint intergovernmental commission, which will become an important platform for the development of trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.
